Space Shuttle Atlantis OV-104

Space Shuttle Atlantis OV-104 was the fourth operational orbiter. Its first flight was STS-51-J which was launched from the Kennedy Space Center on October 3, 1985 and landed at Edwards Air Force Base on October 7, 1985. It flew 33 missions. Its final mission was STS-135 which was launched from the Kennedy Space Center on July 8, 2011 and landed at the Kennedy Space Center on July 21, 2011. It was the final Space Shuttle mission. It is now on display at the Kennedy Space Center.

I photographed Atlantis on two occasions: its departure from Edwards Air Force Base following STS-117 on July 1, 2007 and in the Mate/Demate Device at Edwards Air Force Base following STS-125 on May 29, 2009.

July 1, 2007: Space Shuttle Atlantis departs Edwards Air Force Base following STS-117

Misssion STS-117 diverted to Edwards Air Force Base on June 22, 2007. It was Atlantis' twenty-eighth mission. The Space Shuttle Atlantis OV-104 departed from Runway 22 at Edwards Air Force Base on 747 Sjuttle Carrier Aircraft NASA Nine Zero Five at 6:04 A.M. PDT Sunday, July 1, 2007. It is returning to the Kennedy Space Center. It landed at Rick Husband Amarillo International airport, Texas two hours later. It continued to Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska, arriving at 2:46 PM CDT. It departed from Offut AFB at 7:43 AM CDT on Monday, July 2 and landed at Fort Campbell, Kentucky at 9:14 AM CDT. It departed from Fort Campbell at 5:15 AM CDT on Tuesday, July 3 and landed at the Shuttle Landing Facility at Kennedy Space Center at 8:24 AM EDT.

Boeing 747 Shuttle Carrier Aircraft N905NA taxis to Runway 22 with Atlantis.

Boeing 747 Shuttle Carrier Aircraft N905NA flies under the call sign NASA Nine Zero Five. It is 37 years old. It was originally American Airlines 747-123, N9668. Its Boeing construction number is 20107. It made its first flight on October 15, 1970, and was delivered to American Airlines two weeks later. NASA acquired it on July 18, 1974.

May 29, 2009: Space Shuttle Atlantis at Edwards Air Force Base following STS-125

Space Shuttle Atlantis OV-104 in the Mate/Demate Device at Edwards Air Force Base following STS-125 on May 29, 2009. Preparations for the departure of Atlantis were interrupted by lightning and high winds from the thunderstorms moving through the area. The work area was closed and we were unable to approach closer the Mate/Demate Device than this. Insatlation of the tail cone was delayed by several hours forcing a postponement of the departure from Sunday to Monday morning shortly before sunrise.

A dozen photos of Space Shuttle Endeavour's Final Flights. Boeing 747-Shuttle Carrier Aircraft N905NA and Space Shuttle Endeavour arrived at Edwards Air Force Base from Biggs Army Airfield on September 20, 2012. The pair were placed on static display at the NASA Dryden Flight Research Center that afternoon. The 747/Shuttle stack departed from Edwards Air Force Base on the morning of September 21. It toured California and several landmarks in the LA Basin. It made two low passes over Los Angeles International Airport before making its final landing. The 747-SCA was flown to Edwards Air Force Base on September 24 where it was retired. The Endeavour ison display at the California Science Center.
